Hit and run: Harriet Otim was left in shock after a truck rear-ended her car while she was stationary in traffic on the M5 at Moorebank. A young Blacktown woman was left in a state of shock after a truck rear-ended her car while she was waiting in traffic on the M5 at Moorebanklast Wednesday.

Harriet Otim said while she didn’t remember much about the incident, she was told what had happened. As she began to get out of her car,Ms Otim inadvertently failed to put itinto park.

As the car continued to move forward she became tangled in the seat-belt and was dragged for a short distance.

And that’s when our story’s unlikely hero stepped in. Juan Abarca saw what was unfolding and made a split-seconddecision to drive his car in front of Ms Otim’s to bring her vehicle to a stop.

“It was pretty remarkable what he did,” Ms Otim said.

“I want to say thank you to him, he saved my life.”

Mr Abarca said the only thought in his mindthroughoutthe ordealwas to help his fellow commuter.

“I was on the inside lane coming from Prestons, passing the Hume Highway bridge,I could see a truck suddenly change lanes up ahead,” he said.

“I couldn’t see clearly but I slowed down, I passed the truck and saw a car drifting from the left-hand side toward the right. It looked like it was dragging a jumper or something –then I heard the screams and noticed Harriet was being dragged.

“I was a bit stunned but I knew I had to stop the car.”

Mr Abarca’s car sustained some minor damage and scratches.

“I didn’t want to think too far into what would have happened if she were to get wedged between the car and the barrier or if she went under the wheel,” he said.

“Those were all things I was trying to avoid, I didn’t event think about my car at the time.”

Liverpool Police crime manager Detective InspectorDean Johnstone said Mr Abarca’s actions were “commendableand certainly prevented serious injury to the female driver”.

“It is my opinion that the actions of this person prevented further injury to the woman and further traffic accidents,” he said.

Detective Inspector Johnstone said investigations were continuing to identify the truck, which had left the scene.“Anyone with information or a registration of the truck is urged to contact Liverpool Police Station.”
