New exhibition: Wollondilly Heritage Centre and Museum is hosting a free event to celebrate International Musuems Day.Museums provide a link between the past and the present and are a way for locals to learn about the town’s history.

The Wollondilly Heritage Centre and Museum will recogniseInternational Museums Day byhosting a freeopen daythis Sunday.

Museum visitors can see the new and permanent displays,browse theresearch library and archives and learn about the photographic collection.

The new exhibitions include theHer Wardisplaywhich highlights the contribution of women behind the British Empire in World War I and theBurragorang Boys and Beyond in World War I, which explores the stories of the service men from the Burragorang Valley who enlisted.

Museum member Doreen Lyon said the permanent displays in the main exhibition hall depictedstories of dispossession including the stories of land taken from theIndigenous people by the white settlers.

There are also stories about local Estonian migrants who used to work in the chicken industry.

“History and museums are important because it tells you who you are and where you came from,” Ms Lyon said.

“Local museums are at the heart of the local area. It is where people can go to find out about the area or their local family history.”

Ms Lyon said visitors could wander through the museum on their own or volunteers could take them on a guided tour.

“Our library will be also be open so people can research their own family history via the museum’s online archives or the card index file system,” she said.

Camden also has its own museum where visitors can learn about the town.

“Visitors can see the Red Cross exhibition whichrecognises the Camden contribution on the homefront during World War I,’’ volunteer Doug Barrett said.

“The 100thanniversary of the Camden fire station will be commemorated by a display.A Chinese market gardendisplay will also be installed in the coming weeks.”

The museum often has families, school tours and bus tours visit. The exhibitions change depending on the different events or anniversaries in the area or if local books are released.
