NORTH Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service (NQDVRS) hosted an open day to allow anyone impacted by domestic violence to seek information and support.

Theopen day on Monday wasto let people know where NQDVRS weresituated, what services they have available and to try and alleviate some of the stigma around going into the office and talking to someone.

NQDVRS senior worker, Matthew Moss, said they provide many services for all cases of domestic violence.

“We do everything from advice, referrals, court support, men’s program, Safe At Home program: to assist victims of domestic violence and thehomelessness program: to assistdomesticviolence victims who are at risk of becoming homeless and we help withrelocating,” Mr Moss said.

“The day was well supported by community members although there is still a lot of stigma about coming in and actuallytalking to someone.

“People think that they can’t let anyone know, or that they don’t want people to think any less of them for being affected by domestic violence.”

Mr Moss said if anyone hadbeen affected by domestic violence, they should talk to someone about it.

“It doesn’t have to go through police and it doesn’t have to be a terrible process. They can come into the NQDVRS office, they can talk to people and find out what is available and what resources they can access.

“If the men want to come down and talk to us about their behaviour and find out how they can change, we have the services available.”

NQDVRS is the only specific domestic violence service in North Queensland, other services assist with domestic violence issues but NQDVRS are the only resource centre servicing Mount Isa and surrounding areas.

If anyone would like to seek advice or support about domestic violence,NQDVRS is available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm at the old court house on Isa Street.

There is also Domestic Violence Hotline Queensland that individuals can contact 24 hours a day on1800 811 811.All information given to these services are strictly confidential.
