Blue Mountains Council started rolling out the first of 33,000 green bins on Monday, in preparation for the introduction of the new waste service starting onJuly 4.

Reducing landfill: Mayor Mark Greenhill launched the roll out of the green bins in readiness for the new waste service starting July 4.

“We know that over 30 per centof household waste sent to the city’s landfill in Blaxland is garden vegetation. The introduction of the green bins will mean a significant reduction in garden waste going to landfill, helping to extend its life by a further twoyears.”

Cr Greenhill said the roll out of green bins, and the changes to the garbage and recycling bins, is a huge task. Council is asking residents to help ensure the bin delivery process is successful.

Important information to keep in mind:

The green bin will be delivered twodays before thenormal bin collection day.

When your green bin is delivered, put your garbage and recycling bins out on your next bin collection day, as normal, and leave them out all day.

Garbage and recycling bins will be emptied as normal. Residents are being asked to leave bins out even if they didn’t plan to –to allow for bin lids or sizes to be changed if required. On bin collection day, crews will swap or change over the garbage and recycling bins to ensure each property has the correct bins for the start of the new service on July 4.

An information pack with instructions about what to do with garbage and recycling bins will be attached to the lid of each green bin, as well as an information booklet about the new waste service and a bin collection calendar. If there is a note on any of your bins at the end of the day, follow the instructions.

Cr Greenhill said, “The new waste service will see the council and the community working together to continue reducing waste to landfill in the Blue Mountains.” Any changes to bin sizes can now not be made until October.
