Photo: Bill Jayet The Parkes Fijian Association has been coordinating fundraising activities to assist with major repair work to the Nasautoka district school that was severely damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston earlier this year.

At last count more than $11,000 has been raised including a donation of $2000 from Parkes Shire Council.

The Parkes Rotary Club also donated 10 laptops.

Mr Ilaitia Naqua gave a short presentation at the most recent Council meeting where he outlined the work being undertaken by the association.

His presentation also included photographs of the damage caused and the work in progress which he and his wife took during a visit to the village last month.

Ilaitia, pronounced Elijah, was accompanied to the meeting by Masi Seru and Marika Koroivui.

During his address to Council Ilaitia said that until his visit, the school had no idea of the funds raised.

“Everyone was so grateful to the Parkes community for their generosity,” he said.

“The school management decided to rebuild the main school building and it will be an ongoing project.”

He said assistance had also been provided by the Parkes Christian School who formed a friendship with the Nasautoka district school during a visit last year.

Meanwhile, donations of any kind are still being gratefully received – phone Ilaitia on 0452 125 395.
