AUSTRALIA’s newly-appointed chief scientist will use the upcoming Ag Institute Australiainnovation conference to mark his first official visit to SA.

The national event will be examining the federal government’s innovation policy and its application to industry.

In addition, a range of expert speakers will discuss how delegates can capitalise on the push for greater agricultural innovation in Australia.

Conference organiserGeoff Thomassays the attendance of chief scientist Alan Finkel was a real coup.

“Dr Finkel was appointed to this important role earlier in 2016, and to have him select this event for his first official visit to SA highlights the importance he places on innovation in agriculture,” Mr Thomas said.

“He will discuss the opportunities and challenges of innovation in science, with particular reference to agriculture, which is the real focus of this event.

“It is an excellent opportunity to engage with the chief scientist, and the conference as a whole will be invaluable for delegates wanting to benefit from Australia’s renewed focus on innovation.”

Other speakers include Rowan Ramsey MP, who chaired the recent Inquiry into Agricultural Innovation, and Liza Noonan from CSIRO, who will discuss ways to accelerate innovation.

In addition, James Robinson from Rabobank will speak on financing innovation, while Anna Cochrane from Meridian Ag will cover the opportunities for consultants.

Some of Australia’s best agricultural students will also be competing at the conference for the prestigious AEV Richardson National Student Award, sponsored by Peracto.

Representatives from each state will present their honours research, covering topics such as cassava root silage production, nitrification from root exudates, footrot in sheep and plant growth regulators.

AIA will be hosting the event at the Waite Agricultural Institute in Adelaide, with student presentations on Thursday, May 26, followed by the main program on Friday, May 27.
