The event, which is traditionally held on Christmas Eve, has proven to be popular and usually attracts many visitors from outside the town.

However the Lions Club has proposed bringing the event up to one week earlier, this year on December 16, due to many club members and helpers being away on Christmas Eve.

The club is looking to hold a public meeting in July to discuss the changes and to tell the community it is willing to continue organising the event, but not without input from local businesses and organisations.

Club secretary Kevin Cook said the most recent Christmas Pageant saw some difficulties with numbers to help with tasks including securing the parade route.

“We’re hoping to avoid all people being away and council workers going on leave,” he said.

“We want to make sure we get the correct people here to make it happen.”

The issue of the Christmas Pageant was discussed at the Tumby Bay District Council meeting on May 10 which included the date change and other organisations being involved.

Tumby Bay mayor Sam Telfer said the pageant was a major event for the town andthere was still value for the event being held on Christmas Eve.

“It’s the only event on the Eyre Peninsula on Christmas Eve and attracts visitors from outside the area,” he said.

“It is a community event that needs to be organised and run by the community.”

The Lions Club has already received suggestions from the local community in relation to the event and has expressed its gratitude to any assistance for this year’s event.

Mr Cook said the club was looking for younger members to come on board to help with the club as well as managing the pageant event.

“We need younger members in the Lions Club and are approaching people who might be suitable,” he said.
